Christopher Wool

Over a career that spans three decades, Christopher Wool has conducted a relentless investigation into the question of how to make a painting at a time when new possibilities for the medium might seem exhausted. Extending his practice to photographs, prints, artist’s books, and, most recently, sculpture, he has approached each new work as a site of open-ended experimentation in which images exist as volatile entities that are subject to an array of disruptive processes. Born in Boston, MA, in 1955, Wool attended Sarah Lawrence College, NY, and the New York Studio School, where he studied with painter Jack Tworkov. The artist continues to live and work in New York. His work has been exhibited at the Museum Boymans–van Beuningen, The Netherlands, the Eli Broad Family Foundation, LA, the Museum de Arte Contemporanea de Serralves, Portugal, and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. In 2014, the artist’s career was the subject of a retrospective at The Guggenheim Museum, New York, which subsequently traveled to The Art Institute of Chicago.
