Ed Ruscha

Artist Ed Ruscha serially and humorously examines language and architecture through photographs, drawings, paintings, and artist books as a way to examine, critique, and poke fun at American culture. Born in 1937 in Omaha, Nebraska, Ruscha studied at Los Angeles’s Chouinard Art Institute, known today as the California Institute of the Arts. The artist is based in Los Angeles, and many of his works depict the city, including his artist book with the deadpan title: Every Building on the Sunset Strip, 1966. Ruscha often toys with vernacular, as exemplified by the pastel-on-paper drawings Artists Who Make “Pieces,1976, in which we see the capitalized text floating before a reddish-orange ground, and immediately recognize the implicit pretensions of the word in quotes. The artist has had retrospective exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madri,; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Ruscha’s work is included in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C., among others.
