Francis Bacon

British painter Francis Bacon is known for his portraits, in which his mostly solitary male figures are rendered as deformed, faceless, or screaming. Born in Dublin in 1909, the artist traveled throughout Europe during the 1920s, receiving his art education primarily from viewing master works in various Parisian museums. Bacon lived mostly in London, and his unique style, both grotesque and bleak, eventually gained tremendous popularity in England and abroad. The artist passed away in Madrid in 1992. He was the subject of two retrospectives at the Tate Modern in London, one of which traveled to the Guggenheim Museum, New York in 1972, and another, co-organized with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, that toured to the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid.
